Can’t Decide Which MacBook to Get? Here Are 3 Things to Consider
Deciding on a new Apple MacBook can be challenging. Should you go with a MacBook Pro 14 inch model with the Apple M1 chip? Or maybe you need the productive power of a larger MacBook Pro with the glorious 16 inch screen. Or maybe you need the ultra-portability of one of the MacBook Air 13 inch models. If you’re stuck between a MacBook and a hard place, look no further. Here are a few questions you need to ask yourself, along with a few tips to help you arrive at the right decision based on your needs.
What’s Your Budget?
This might be the most important question of all. Before you set out on
your MacBook-buying journey, it’s important to have a budget (or range)
in mind. Your budget can inform the buying experience. A smaller budget
may put you in line for a MacBook Air, while a larger budget may mean
you’re well-positioned for a MacBook Pro with custom options.
Of course, whether your budget is limited or flexible isn’t the end-all
be-all. You may have a limited budget, but you may be able to get a
higher-end model through a retailer’s MacBook trade in
program. Alternatively, you may have a flexible budget, but a high-end
MacBook is too much MacBook for your needs. So, let’s look at a couple
more questions to narrow things down.
What Are Your Computing Goals?
We’re all content creators in one way or another. That’s why you’re
looking to get a MacBook. You may be a writer, a photographer, a
videographer, a musician, or you simply need a reliable computer to get
work done. When your primary goals include checking email, browsing the
web, streaming content, and writing, one of the MacBook Air 13 inch
models may meet your needs (with plenty of computing power to spare).
However, if you’re rendering super high-res raw images or doing more
intense visual work, you may need to turn your attention to the MacBook
Pro line. The more intense your needs, the higher-end the model. If you
need a vibrant screen that delivers on detail—while giving you plenty of
processing power and RAM—a custom configured 16 inch MacBook may be the
way to go.
How Mobile Do You Want to Be?
If you’re on the go all the time, portability is a concern. Thankfully,
you once again have options. The MacBook Air 13 inch line is, as you’d
expect, the most portable line of Apple laptops. Both the 13 and 14 inch
MacBook Pro lines still retain portability while giving you more
options when it comes to processors, RAM, and storage.
Additionally, the 16 inch line still offers some portability, but it
does start to feel more limited in terms of how much space you need to
work. There is another option if you need ultra-portability: the iPad
and iPad Pro lines. These devices can be productivity powerhouses, too,
however, you’ll want to check out the keyboard attachments and other
accessories to enhance the experience.
